3 Shots For A Quarter: Chinese Explosions, Rare Brian Scalabrine Footage And Sean Burke’s Debut

This is a blog series that’s quickly becoming a daily fixture here on CarlsBlogs.com, mostly because I like the format of sharing 3 insignificant stories.

Before I do though, some quick & general programming notes:

  1. Reminder that we’re regularly programmed on Mondays-Thursdays with Fridays off to volunteer and work on the family business Sterk Family Farms
  2. I’ll blog Cubs on the weekends in-season but I’m not exactly sure on the format. Probably playing a lot of Ball or Strike
  3. There’s a 5pm Cubs blog every day called News & Notes. I’ll use today to preview the Dodgers series.
  4. There’s still 2 weeks before regular opening day and plenty of questions to answer before then. So expect a longer preview closer to MLB’s official opener
  5. Lineup previews will be regularly scheduled starting tomorrow morning at 4am and assuming I wake up on time. Obviously I’ll try my best but no promises with a 5amfirst pitch no matter how
  6. Blah blah blah
  7. Mahoney and I will be running back the Cubs podcast in April

Other general, personal notes before I get to my 3 stories:

  • Slow day for sports
  • I had a leftover italian beef from Portillos and it holds up in the fridge if you wrap it in foil and then reheat in the oven. I don’t know who needs to hear this but I’m really happy with how my lunch turned out
  • 5 loads of laundry after a big weekend of celebrating myself is a personal record. I’ve done 4 a couple times since we bought the house but never a 5-bagger and never with so much precision on the fold
  • Probably doing steak fajitas on corn tortillas for dinner tonight and that’s really good news. I got the fajitas-bug a couple months back and it’s been a valued-addition to the starting rotation. Like how Fernando Valenzuela completely took over LA in his debut for the Dodgers… nobody saw it coming but everybody still loved it. The same thing’s going on with fajitas in my house right now and it’s really special
  • I’m probably 3 weeks away from fertilizing the front yard and then another 2-3 weeks on the mulch. I’ll probably go with one big load this year vs. buying individual bags but a lot of that will depend on the price of mulch. Especially golden and red cedar as I find that to be most appropriate fit for our native plant species.
  • I need to pave about 30,000 square feet of gravel in May. Email me if you know a guy in the Aurora area that can fulfill a light commercial paving contract Carl@CarlsBlogs.com

Let’s get to the stories:

Fire In The Hole

I’m not afraid to admit this video made me laugh very hard and that I enjoyed it very much. That’s because most dudes will agree: blowing shit up is awesome.

And really it’s just a good example of why I want to keep a 3 Shots blog in the first place. Not everything has to be ground breaking and newsworthy and all that bullshit. In fact most of the internet is just a mindless distraction from what’s important in life, which is exactly why I love this video so much. Just some dude in a rice field blowing up a copper pot and trying not to injure himself in the process for no other reason than my original point: blowing shit up is awesome.

So is Brian Scalabrine 1 on 1 Content

Scalabrine on the Bulls was the best time to be a Bulls fan post Jordan and I don’t even know if there’s a #2 on the list. Just a really special time to be a Chicago fan with Jay Cutler and D Rose and the Blackhawks emerging and a competent mayor bidding on the Olympics and Mark Buehrle throwing 8 shutout innings in an hour and fifteen minutes. Everything was pointing up and you can trace the collective downfall to the moment Scalabrine left the city for good. And now over a decade later, things haven’t really fully recovered.

How much of that is because of Brian Scalabrine?

Probably very little if we’re being honest.

But that doesn’t change the fact that he loves playing random dudes in 1-on-1 and that’s always been a cool thing about Brian Scalabrine.

Speaking of underwhelming Chicago athletes…

Sean Burke Is The White Sox Opening Day Starter…

And he’s got ELITE company

Sean Burke is a big ass RHP from the University of Maryland that’s walked about 5 guys per 9 innings in his minor league career. And while I don’t have the list in front of me, I’m willing to bet that’s the absolute worst professional walk-rate of any first-time opening-day starter. Think Kyle Farnsworth meets Nuke LaLoosh without any of the inrospection.

From that, my question is whether that’s more pathetic for (a) Sean Burke or (b) the White Sox for being forced to start him?

On one hand, it’s almost impossible for me to imagine someone that wild getting to the big leagues – especially as a #1. His command and control is downright atrocious and I don’t think that’s something that improves overnight your rookie year.

On the other hand, the White Sox are in full tank mode before the season even started and this is all part of that plan. Or at least you hope so because it’s quite honestly that pathetic on paper.

Personally it’s too hard for me to decide, so let’s just agree on this:

White Sox fans deserve so much more than Sean Burke. And until Jerry Reinsdorf sells, that’s never going to happen.

Sincerely – I’m sorry to all the decent White Sox fans out there that have to endure this.

I quite literally cannot even imagine.

  1. The thing that saved my marriage was getting a crew to do the mulching. There was a year were I had the village drop off free mulch(trees that they sent through the chipper) which was a fail. With bags you gotta buy like 70 bags to get the job done. Two years ago he had the crew do the mulching and never looked back. Wife and I didn’t spend the weekend hollering at each other which is a ++
