This is good news and bad news at the same time.
The bad news is that the Cubs weren’t even runner-up to Alex Bregman and I find that surprising. We were made to believe Bregman would’ve picked the Cubs but-for Boston’s last minute 3-year deal for the same amount of money.
So bad news is that Detroit was more appealing to Bregman for less money. And more than just bad news, it’s actually kind of depressing. Especially after the first 2 games of the season where it already feels like we’re missing one more middle-of-the-order bat that Bregman would perfectly supply.
Bad news is the Cubs aren’t even in the conversation for making a tough decision in free agency, and they offered him $120,000,000 over 4 years.
Again, all of this is bad news. It blows losing out on nearly every free agent and it’s even worse to be disrespected by Detroit in the process. Like it legitimately makes me angry enough to do somersaults in my head and fortunately that’s allowed me to decipher some good news…
I can finally put Alex Bregman to rest in my brain. I had planned on following his time in Boston and comparing him game-for-game with Matt Shaw nearly every day for the next 3 years. He’s owned so much real estate in my head since he picked Boston and that’s largely because I naturally assumed we narrowly missed out on him.
Well turns out that’s complete bullshit so we can just forget about him like all the other free agents that took a powerpoint meeting from Carter Hawkins over the last two years. And unfortunately there’s been plenty to reflect on with the one bright spot being Shota Imanaga.
Well turns out Shota’s been the best player since signing so wouldn’t it be logical to sign more good players? We’re 1-1 on notable free agents since Carter took over so maybe it makes sense to spend a little more money to get the guys he’s targeting. That’s just one idea and I’ve got plenty more.
For now I just wanted to raise awareness to Cubs fans everywhere that we can conclusively move on from Alex Bregman because he never even considered us in the first place.
Does that hurt my feelings?
Absolutely and that’s starting to become a problem.
