I hate to mail in a 3:30pm blog but I’m diving deep into the Cubs weekend and looking ahead at this A’s matchup pretty hard. As such I need to slide into the 3:30 and keep it moving on the meat and potatoes. So you guys can get distracted with my favorite doom scroll video of the day and that’s the 50 best high school plays of all time.
Fun fact about me is that I’ve long been obsessed with high school basketball. So much that I used to be a message board recruiting guy back in the earlier internet days of the mid 2000’s. It was a wild time when one guy with a handful of usernames could drastically influence the regional opinions of certain players.
I’ve grown out of the obsession but it still manifests itself in strange ways: I naturally became fascinated with baseball scouting reports in college, and I’ve got absurd recall for player hometowns and high schools across all sports and levels. None of which came by choice but was more from a survival standpoint of knowing enough information to be valuable because I couldn’t locate my fastball worth a shit in the early stages of my career.
All of which has brings me to you on this blog complaining about the Cubs and asking for more out of my life. You don’t have to look very far to trace it back to my days as a high school basketball lunatic, tracking and ranking and comparing everything I could get my hands on in some vague quest to be A Guy.
Much time has passed but not much has changed and that’s plenty fine by me. Especially if it means running back the top 50 high school basketball plays of all time? Sign me up.
Some takes:
- The most thunderous dunks exist in the smallest and emptiest gymnasiums
- I expected multiple submissions from Zion Williamson
- I did not expect multiple submissions from Mac McClung
- Angel Santiago from Von Steuben high school should have at least 10 plays on this list himself
- Not a lot of white guys throwing bounce passes on this list which kinda validates my run-and-gun attitude
- High school mixtapes are the #1 mixtapes. The only thing that can compare is mid-major grainy football montages to Nickelback or Creed, which is a long dead breed of highlights.
- The NCAA tournament absolutely fuckin blows this year
I’ll be back at 5pm with more on the Cubs this weekend.
PS – Scottie Puppen says he’s feeling much better. Thank you for asking.
