I have to go do some work for Sterk Family Farms so excuse me over this extended lunch break. I wanted to repurpose this Monday’s podcast with Mahoney because it’s a good Cubs show and I want people to know about it.
So go check it out if you haven’t listened yet. My buddy Mahoney is one of the funniest guys you’re ever gonna meet. He’s been cracking me up for the better part of 15 years and it’s literally become an obligation of mine to share his sense of humor with people. You can follow him here:
The first time we met, Mahoney needed a place to crash at U of I back in like 2007. He’s close friends with a former teammate of mine (Jake) who had graduated the year prior. At about 4am on a Saturday/Sunday morning I get a call from my teammate WASTED looking for a place to crash.
You got that house in Urabana with the bedrooms right?
Yes I’m the one with the bedrooms. Come on over.
2 minutes later there’s a knock on the door.
That was quick.
We were waiting outside actually.
That was a funny night because we stayed up to watch the sunrise, smoking cigs and crushing beers on the patio. I had a game that Sunday morning against Penn State but had already pitched Friday night so we just got loaded.
Anyways Mahoney showed up with Jake and we became instant friends. And now 18 years later, I’ve been lucky enough to spend some great times with a remarkably good group of friends.
Bowling. 16 inch. Bar crawls. Weddings and bachelor parties. Double dates and concerts and comedy shows and trips across the country to see more concerts and approximately 1,000 Cubs games and an infinite amount of good times.
Enough for me to know I’m very lucky to have good friends and to be able to work on a Cubs show with Mahoney has been a really refreshing part of this next chapter. So please give it a shot if you like the Cubs or otherwise just toss Mahoney a follow and say something nice.
Some background:
- Class of 02 at Sandburg
- He’s got 2 kids
- He owns and operates a technology brokerage to help source IT vendors and essentially slash pricing for better services
- Favorite band is Goose
- He will collect Grateful Dead memorabilia/jewelry though for his wife
- Not a great golfer by any stretch but one of my favorite people to golf with if that makes sense
- Charter member of the Bi Monthly Pizza Club that meets the 2nd to last Wednesday of every odd numbered month
- He has a really weak left ankle that gets sprained 2-3 times a year
- Probably the most fun person I consider a freind
I’m not trying to blow the guy but figured if I’m going to be posting a show with him, I might as well just give you guys a little context on the character.
Most importantly: he’s a great character and a great friend and I think you guys are going to like him a lot.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go pick up 40 pounds of grass fed free range beef tallow.
