Lineup preview from a Jewel Starbucks earlier today with a tall nitro and I wanted to formally reintroduce my position on Matt Shaw.
Specifically: how and why I choose to be hard on him.
The easy answer is because you guys are too busy sucking his dick. Like the opposite of Mitch Trubisky. Nobody’s on the other side of the equation saying Maybe there’s an alternative?
Every Cubs fan has been bitching for Matt Shaw to come back since he left. Every Cubs fan with a voice has complained about the 3rd base mix. Everyone thinks Matt Shaw is our savior and he’s awesome and should win rookie of the year and all this shit.
And while some of that is very true: he’s our most talented 3rd baseman right now and the other guys we’ve considered were awful. The more important consideration is that he’s directly responsible for what we do at the trade deadline and that’s going to be decided over the next 7 weeks.
In that spirit, I’m not inclined to suck the skin off his cock. There’s too much at stake with the 3rd base position than to do anything less than the highest standards. And when I look around the Cubs universe, I see so few people willing to be hard on Matt Shaw’s development.
Even as I type this he smokes a double to right field – his 3rd in as many games.
And even as I type this, I realize he’s our best option and will be a very good player in short order.
I just think it’s important to hold off on giving him credit for as long as possible. I think it only makes him better to feel like he’s not good enough and that’s because he’s a raging psychopath about baseball. In fact I think he plays worse when made to feel like he’s special and awesome and all that shit.
So let me lead the way on being critical towards Matt Shaw for the sole reason of sharpening his blade.
Let me be the one to say he needs to start throwing the ball through Michael Busch’s face instead of puss arming it in the dirt because he’s nervous.
And get an attitude to yourself instead of being so impressed and amazed with the big leagues. You’re here to dominate and I want to see that written on his face. Right now there’s too much Aw Shucks, Jee Wiz, This Is So Fun and we need to get rid of it.
I know this is a stupid blog and generally a lonely position to take on our #1 prospect but this is just part of baseball culture. Being hard on a guy for literally no reason other than you don’t want to be nice because you don’t want him hearing anything nice. That’s at every level of the game inside every dugout without restraint. So for the final time, let me be that guy with Matt Shaw for no other reason than it’s in his best interest.
Now get that fuckin arm up on your throws across the infield and start hustling off the field.
Pronto.
