I’m actually a huge font guy and always have been going back to OG computer class days when my school banned Oregon trail for hunting/gaming abuses. And it’s long before the internet so we’re basically left to the word processor and maybe a game of solitaire. A lot of guys used the time fuckin around with WinDings while I was knee deep cataloguing the different font styles and themes and vibes.
Which brings me to this blog confidently.
I like this shit a lot.

It’s called BlackLetter, which is a traditionally Western European Gothic-inspired script that originated in the mid-12th century. It’s closely tied to the famous Frankish Carolingian Minuscule that became widely adopted due to Emperor Charlemagne’s influence towards the end of the 8th century. As education and literacy developed, scribal publication required a smaller and more narrow font to save on paper costs. Carolingian Minuscule was simply to wide and inefficient to meet the demand for new books. Fast-froward to about 1200 where BlackLetter really emerged in publishing as a reliable and popular font. It wasn’t as naturally legible as its Carolingian ancestor but it certainly does the trick.
It stayed at the top for over 500 years ultimately settling into Scandinavian culture until the breakout of World War II when publication uniformly stopped because HITLER BANNED IT.
This font has so much rich history and tradition.
Comparatively, Times New Roman has approximately 460 years to go before you even put it in the same conversation.
So when you break it down like that, it’s really cool to see the Bears make a pivot to BlackLetter for contract announcements.
Why is this important?

NFL Free Agency starts today and I 100% expect the Bears to unload a truck full of money for Drew Dalman from the Falcons. Widely considered one of the better centers in the league, Dalman will perfectly round out the interior offensive line after adding Jonah Jackson and Joe Thuney last week.
And if we can do this before the draft, then we’re playing with house money at #10 to the point that I would like to see a trade down that involves adding another 2nd rounder. And then using the first 4 picks of the draft on defensive lineman and maybe the North Dakota State tackle. Maybe somebody else. I don’t know exactly – just that I want big mean motherfuckers on this roster, and I want Dalman and Thuney being the veteran voices for their development.
That’s honestly a dream come true from where the Bears were last year, and the fact we can make these announcements in BlackLetter is really powerful shit.
And remember: Winning in the NFL comes down to details. Obviously you want good players and better coaching and all that shit. But the difference between Champions and Losers is often decided in the details and I absolutely love the Chicago Bears have been detailed enough in their offseason prep to make a full BlackLetter conversion.
So take this for what it is:
A huge step in the right direction.
Where is Darnold going. Asking as a Vikings fan.
Seattle most likely
Chargers just resigned Khalil Mack for 1 year $18 mil
