This is going to kill me and I want to get out in front of it right now.
I’m very happy to have Kyle Tucker in a Cubs’ uniform and I think we have enough to make 2025 a special season.
But I’ll be damned if I didn’t admit Cam Smith looks like a bonafide All Star everyday player, and I had no idea when we traded him away. If I saw this swing at the time of the deal, I would barf all over myself. And it’s not because Kyle Tucker sucks or whatever, but because Tom Ricketts created this situation for Cubs’ fans.
If we had a decent budget this offseason or last, we wouldn’t have to overreach for Kyle Tucker to win a division title to keep heat off the front office.
If we had a decent budget this offseason or last, we wouldn’t have to mortgage the future of the big league club just to have a better shot at beating MILWAUKEE.
If Tom Ricketts maintained a healthy and competitive organization, we would have Cam Smith and Matt Shaw in the same infield for the next decade.
Instead we get one season of Kyle Tucker, who will 1000000% sign somewhere else in free agency because Tom Ricketts will never spend what it takes to for a modern superstar.
So if I can assume that Kyle Tucker is only here for one season, then I can get really mad in the future when Cam Smith is very good. Because if that’s what he looks like right now, let there be no doubt that he’s going to be a MONSTER in the big leagues. I’m talking 40 homers and 100 runs and looking absolutely incredible and sweet and big league in the process.
All so we could beat Milwaukee.
Makes me sick.
PS – Matt Shaw is supposed to be better and I feel like that’s going to be important to remember as the years go on: Matt Shaw is supposed to be better.
