Heads Up: Johnsonville Is Recalling Almost 23,000 Pounds Of Cheddar Bratwurst

WGN — Federal health officials say thousands of pounds of bratwurst sold in 10 states are being recalled because the sausages may contain hard plastic.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced in a press release on April 5 that Johnsonville is recalling 22,672 pounds of cheddar bratwurst.

Johnsonville initiated the recall after two complaints from customers regarding hard plastic in the bratwurst. No reports of injury have been made yet in association with this recall.

We’ve got about 8 hours before first pitch tonight against the Rangers so I figured it would be a good opportunity to raise awareness that we got some bad brats in the grocery stores.

Specifically Johnsonville accidentally and/or potentially included hard plastics in almost 23,000 pounds of product. So if you’re a Johnsonville guy, probably something to keep an eye out for in the next couple weeks.

More importantly though, are there such things as Johnsonville Guys?

I went to a Bears Packers game a couple years ago and Johnsonville signage is everywhere. So I obliged. I got a cheddar brat in the 2nd quarter and it was the worst concession experience of my life and this was late September. The cheese was hardened into small plastic pieces and now it all makes sense.

Maybe Johnsonville just blows.

What I know for certain is that I buy my brats from the butcher shop. It’s the lowest quality meat that I refuse to buy from a grocery store. And while I understand that’s very snobby, I’m a very snobby meat eater. I was raised on butcher shop cuts and I’ll die that way.

Lunch meat? I can buy that from the Jewel no problem provided they shave the Krakus ham to a translucent width.

I can also go Vienna prepackaged dogs if necessary but I don’t want to. I will but I don’t want to.

Other meats I can get from Jewel:

  • I’ll be trashy and get one of those Italian Beef buckets once a year
  • Beef stew prepackaged
  • Frozen Bubba burgers in a pinch
  • Prosciutto from the cheese section
  • Some bacon
  • Most breakfast sausage
  • Home run inn sausage supreme

That’s a complete list. Everything else is from a butcher shop because I was raised to understand the difference.

And again – I understand that makes me a snob. But the quality gap is so high that I don’t even think about it like that.

Same thing goes for Tampa strip clubs.

Remind me to explain that in a later blog.
