This is a Chicago Bears Round Up Blog (CBRUB) which is funny because I have a buddy named CB who likes a good RUB but that’s a different blog.
For now I just want to get the CBRUB introduced and rolling as we have miscellaneous Bears news to address and I think the best course of action is loosely rounding it all up in one blog as appropriate.
Maybe this is a weekly offseason edition. Maybe it takes on more frequency as we get closer to the draft. But right now we’re just getting started and that’s the most important thing.
*CBRUB engaged*
1. Eric Bienemy is not fucking around
A lot of people want Ashton Jeanty but can we first make sure he can handle the verbal beating Eric Bienemy puts on world class players?
And I know even more people are going to say this is Good For The Player and that I’m Being A Huge Pussy. But it’s not about me. It’s about whether Ashton Jeanty can put up with this kinda approach or does he need kid gloves like every other athlete in Chicago?
I’m being serious. This kinda makes me nervous because there’s simply so many pussies out there playing sports today. And if Eric Bienemy is going to challenge their manhood, I don’t think it ends well because they’re just going to cry to their agent and demand a trade to Miami.
No joke. Dead serious. I watched that video and thought this is going to hurt Caleb Williams’s feelings. And I don’t think anybody can disagree or say that’s not a problem.
So just keep your eyes peeled for Eric Bienemy stories. I’m a little nervous this could be a huge mistake without an Andy Reid presence to moderate and mitigate player abuse.
2. Bears Graded A from CBS
I don’t overlook or admonish offseason championships the same way you guys do. To me this actually matters whether it’s from CBS or CVS or DCFS. So long as we have positive things to say about the Chicago Bears then you have my attention.
That said, adding 5 hog mollys to a team in desperate need of hog mollys is how you turn the culture in a week. Ryan Poles might be dumb and easily deceived but hade the right moves in free agency enough that we can start talking about Jeanty seriously.
And with it, a good chance for me to revisit my overall draft strategy.
3. Specifically: Draft Ashton Jeanty If You Can Get Him At 10
I don’t want to trade up for a running back. And I don’t want to trade down for a project on the offensive line. If he’s available at 10, then I think we take the running back under the Best Player Available mentality.
But I wouldn’t be trading up for him. I would only trade up for Abdul Carter right now with the understanding that I need to do more research.
At the present moment, this is a big turn from my previous position of only trenches. Now that we’ve added 5 veterans, I’m more inclined for trench depth in later rounds because it’s not a premium need whereas an All Pro talented running back would drastically change the landscape.
Yeah but can he block?
I don’t give a shit. I need 1500 all purpose yards and double digit touchdowns to take the pressure off Caleb and open up the passing lanes. If this is the time then so be it. But don’t trade up to take a running back because that’s how you curse your franchise for the next decade with stupidity.
4. Reminder: We Traded Greg Olsen
Which I think needs to get more favorable treatment in the long-run because we ended up flipping the 3rd rounder from Carolina to Miami for Brandon Marshall. He had 3500 yards and 31 touchdowns as our first #1 since Mush and that has to stand for something. Even if Olsen went for 6500 and 39 touchdowns in 9 seasons with Carolina and even if it was a stupid trade in isolation. I think the Bears deserve some credit for flipping a 3rd rounder for Brandon Marshall for those 3 seasons.
But you never hear about it because it’s simply easier to talk shit about the Bears so just do that instead.
5. Bears Projected To Pass On Will Campbell Now
I don’t want to read too much into that but I think it’s worth sharing if you’re an expert in mock drafting. To me this says more about free agency and the Bears’ needs more than anything else. Unless of course an expert wants to correct the record. Then by all means please do so.
6. TAKE ME BACK
Last but not least is a friendly throwback to the best Bears run defense of my life and the proudest I’ve ever been as a Chicago sports fan. Even compared to the Jordan dynasty and the Cubs World Series. There’s nothing that made you love the city more than knowing the defense would give up 150 total yards and 2 field goals on a chilly afternoon in October en route to a 9-6 win on the foot of Paul Edinger.
Those were quite literally the Good Old Days and they must never be forgotten.
God Bless and Go Bears
