PGA Championship Preview 2025

The coveted PGA Championship will tee off this Thursday at 8:22 EST. This year’s tournament will be played at the legendary Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although many golf fans aren’t thrilled with this selection, the course has provided great moments in the sport’s history, and I expect nothing less for this event. Quail Hollow is also a regular stop on the PGA Tour, hosting the Wells Fargo Championship and having previously hosted the Presidents Cup in 2022.

Quail Hollow is a Par 71, measuring just over 7,500 yards. It features Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda grass and was originally designed by George Cobb in 1961. The course has since undergone multiple redesigns by Tom Fazio, most recently in 2016.

Key Course Features

“Green Mile” – Holes 16–18: Among the toughest finishing stretches on tour. The 16th is a long, slight dogleg left with water on the left side. The 17th is an iconic par-3 with an intimidating water carry. The 18th is a monstrous par-4 with a tight landing zone and a demanding approach.

“Long Bombs Away”: Distance off the tee will be a key factor in this year’s PGA Championship, but accuracy will ultimately determine who lifts the trophy.

Firm & Fast Greens: These Bermuda greens typically play very firm and fast. This benefits players from the Southeast or those who played college golf in similar conditions. However, if the weather turns sloppy, green speed may not be as influential as in years past.

Key Metrics for Success at Quail Hollow

  • Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (SG: OTT): Driving distance and accuracy are at a premium due to the course’s length and punishing rough.
  • Strokes Gained: Approach (SG: APP): Long iron play is vital, especially on par-4s in the 450–500 yard range.
  • Strokes Gained: Putting (SG: PUTT) on Bermuda: Proficiency on fast Bermuda greens can separate the contenders.
  • Par-4 Scoring (450–500 yards): Many holes fall within this range—strong play here is a difference-maker.
  • Bogey Avoidance: With scoring opportunities limited, minimizing mistakes is often more important than chasing birdies.
