I don’t want to make a huge deal out of this because that would be selfish but I’d be remiss not to point out that Big Skin is on the attack against small business like Sterk Family Farms.
Specifically now that we’ve hit our sales goal for the first 6 weeks, the news articles are starting to pour in that beef tallow skin care might be too dangerous for an industry filled with toxic chemicals.
When you see shit like this, you know you’re going down the right path.
Is beef tallow good for your face?
Beef tallow can prevent water loss when layered on your face, says Dr. Heather Rogers, dermatologist and clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington, but it’s still not a good moisturizer. “Moisturizer by definition is a combination of oil and water,” she says. “Your skin needs both, but beef tallow is just fat, so you’re not getting any additional benefits.”
Beef tallow is also comedogenic, especially for people with oily skin, says Rogers. This means it can clog pores and cause acne – however, this hasn’t been thoroughly studied, she adds.
Beef tallow contains small amounts of vitamins D, A, K and E, says Rogers. However, it doesn’t have the vitamins that have been shown to be “most powerful for our skin”, such as vitamin C.
That said, beef tallow does have an occlusive, or sealant, effect. Like Vaseline or castor oil, it could help damaged skin from eczema or other skin conditions and injuries heal more quickly, says Rogers: “Your skin has to maintain its water levels to heal itself. When you have an open wound, all that water evaporates, the skin dries out and forms a scab.”
But beef tallow is “not a miracle treatment”, she says, and dermatologists don’t recommend it. “It’s not going to help with wrinkles or acne,” says Rogers. “It’s not activating any change on your skin.”
Your dermatologist works for Big Pharma. Hate to break it to you but they only care about reimbursements and that’s never going to change.
Couple other things:
- The criticisms haven’t been thoroughly studied – so maybe they should be criticisms. That’s only logical
- You’re complaining about a lack of vitamins while pointing out 4 different naturally occurring vitamins which is insane
- How can beef tallow not provide water while also being good at maintaining water levels? I don’t understand that connection and would like someone to EXPLAIN IT TO ME LIKE I’M A MORON
- Another thing I don’t get – how do you say it’s not good for people but then single out eczema and say it can heal that quickly? That’s like saying a starting pitcher is only good in the World Series so he’s not a good pitcher. How the fuck does that make any sense?
It doesn’t, and that’s because Big Skincare is so nervous about Beef Tallow Balm. So they’re sending this little smokeshow dermatologist to talk a bunch of shit.

alexa again

I like a smokey little milfy dermatologist just like everybody else. But we gotta draw the line somewhere and that somewhere is on my family business.
Here’s the truth.
Beef tallow is a natural balm. There’s so much biology and nutrients that closely mimic exactly what the human skin needs to stay healthy. Comparatively, there’s a bunch of chemicals and toxically engineered ingredients that cosmetic companies put into their products to create physical dependencies. That’s why you have to use a lot of moisturizers REGULARLY. That’s why your chapstick dries up after 30 minutes and you use more. It’s why your hands never really heal from a brutal winter. And it’s why you can’t find a decent lotion to give you results. So you pay more to slather on worse shit and nothing improves.
It’s a good business model if you’re selling the toxic shit in the first place.
But for everyone else it’s complete trash and I know this because I went through all of this starting with a fancy dermatologist that didn’t give a shit about me. I’ve been down more skincare paths than I care to talk about and it wasn’t until Mrs. Carl started buying (and then making) tallow in 2022. The longer story involves camera work and personal insecurities on my part, and the end result got me into beef tallow. So much that we now own a company that ships beef tallow across the country. We’ve sold more in the first couple weeks than I would have forecasted for the first 6 months.
And that’s because people are catching on for themselves. There’s enough traction from all over, and just about everybody in the market is a small family owned business like Sterk Family Farms.
So no surprise big skincare wants to scare the general public away from us and back into the Sephora checkout line.
Which quite honestly might be the best selling point I could ever ask for.
If they’re telling you to be afraid and stay away, it’s because they’re afraid it won’t go away.
Does that make sense?
I hope so because it’s really good shit and I don’t think it’s slowing down. Especially with Farmers Market season around the corner and all the chatter in the market about tallow skincare.
With that – THANK YOU to everyone that’s supported the business so far. It’s been a lot of fun and even more rewarding to make a good product with Nicole. We’ve gotten amazing feedback and we’re only going to keep doing more.
So Thank You for helping us get to this point and don’t be bashful if you’re on the fence. Your skin will never feel so fresh and health.
