OPINION: Trailer Culture Is Exhausting

The Happy Gilmore 2 Trailer came out today and people everywhere are freaking out. Some people LOVE it. Other people obviously HATE it. Many others have extended opinions and long winded thoughts from the release and quite frankly all of it makes me sick to my stomach.

And I know I’ve been complaining a lot lately. Mostly because me sleep schedule’s on another planet and I just turned 38 and my back’s sore.

But also because I’m just inundated with dumb shit and the latest chapter is People Who Overreact To Trailers.

Just shut the fuck up already.

It’s a trailer.

It’s a promotional video from Netflix.

People are acting like it means something because they feel something because they have one clip of that one guy and it’s really well done for a streaming service trailer. People willing to make wholesale interpretations on the basis of watching a heavily edited 2 minute montage. These people stink and they’re all over the internet today.

Here’s the reality.

The movie will be fine.

Some moments will make you laugh because Adam Sandler is a pivotal figure from your childhood. He has the biggest leg up on anybody when it comes to making you smile. He could eat a sandwich on camera, not say one word, and we’d all find it enjoyable because it’s Adam Sandler. I love everything he does and everything he makes because he’s awesome. Happy Gilmore 2 will be no different because I’m a kid from the 90’s like so many of you, and there’s really no need to complicate it any further.

And this is just a Happy Gilmore sequel.

Dune 3?

I want to barf just thinking about all the philosophy majors creaming their shorts over the scale and scope of a Shai-Hulud stillshot amidst a vividly-arid Arrakis backdrop.

Makes me wonder when all these losers started turning up in society.

Was it like this when the Godfather 2 trailer dropped?

What about Goodfellas?

Did HEAT get the same helmet wash?

I’m asking because those are all highly regarded movies from an era before the internet. And I suspect social media has created this circle-jerking-vacuum of making fancy opinions out of nothing.

In other words, it didn’t use to be like that.

Watching a trailer used to be cool. It used to mean something.

Now it’s just an opportunity for you to say something that’s both equal parts unique and meaningless. Maybe along the way it drums up some interest but certainly not from a guy like me. Trailers never worked like that.

They’re supposed to be the reward for showing up to a movie early. So you can look at the person you came with and say we need to go see that movie mere moments before you enjoy a different movie. It’s a beautiful cycle and it kinda really bothers me we’ve turned it into something much bigger and grander for the sole purpose of self aggrandizing.

So please stop doing that and instead just the fuckin trailer.
