I’ve been listening to a lot more studio work the last couple months and it’s actually like a completely different band. There’s so much more of an influence from Phil Lesh in these recordings and I’m not saying that just because it opens with Box of Rain. I mean in the way the music is presented to the listener. The forced structure of a studio recording brings out the true personalities and that’s something I’m picking up on more this time around the studio albums.
In that spirit, I wonder how the track listing would change knowing what they know now. Truckin last? Brokedown Palace 7th? Ripple on the B side as a 1st track? Sugar Magnolia not leading off?
It’s fun to think about this stuff provided you’re not a hardo.
That’s a delicate balance in the world of music: to enjoy stuff and hold specific opinions while still being open minded to the fact you’re just 1 of billions taking this shit in. It’s a slippery slope if you want to be a jagoff about the music and there’s plenty out there to keep you company.
Personally I want to compile my own studio album rankings but I need a lot more time and understanding to perfect my list.
Right now though I have Workingman’s Dead in a slight edge over American Beauty and it’s more for the departure from the late 60’s work into the Americana phase that ultimately wins that battle. But it’s no runaway train and not by a long shot.
And while this could be construed as weird or crazy, I actually really like Phish in studio. There’s less of an inside joke I need to keep up with and it’s much easier following the song transitions. And also no zombie hippies trying to mooch a taste of my IPA so that’s nice but not necessary in critical review.
Anyways today is Thursday June 5th and I hope it’s a good one.
We’re just changing up the vibes slightly here with a music first day into tonight’s 5:45pm rubber match against the Washington Nationals.
Some other thoughts:
- I don’t love Cole Kmet and that’s going to piss some people off but I saw some press highlights of him yesterday and he sounded like a baby needing to be burped by Ben Johnson over his playing time with Colston Loveland.
- The Bears are such a joke of an organization historically that all you need to say in the situation is “I just want to win football games because we never win football games so whatever coach tells us to do to win football games is what I’m willing to do as a perpetual loser on the football field.” That’s extreme but it’s closer to the kind of language that won’t make my brain explode.
- I went grocery shopping yesterday and that means a great breakfast lunch and dinner today. Day after grocery shopping deserves more respect if we’re being honest.
- We’re always being honest
- I hope everyone has a nice positive day
Go Cubs.
