I don’t want to make this blog too complicated. Mahoney and I just finished the MMCS today and it just got posted so go check that out. One big thing we missed on the show is how Pete Crow Armstrong is willing to play public golf on an off day around Chicago and that’s awesome.
Granted – most clubs are closed on Mondays except for Black Sheep and I believe Bob O Link. So I don’t want to stroke the youngster too hard on his blue collar values. This really could just be a case of nowhere else to play. So you’re hacking up a public course inbetween two foursomes grossing 300 years of total age. I’ve been there before and it’s awesome it know Pete’s one of us.
My only thing is that we have a short window where this is allowable for PCA. He’s still a rookie on league minimum and he’s still very young around town. So I don’t want to be too mean. But forchrissakes Crane Kenny can’t pull a string for a guy we’re trying to extend? Jed Hoyer doesn’t have a connect at Rich Harvest Farm for an off day on the property? You’re telling me this is the best our MVP candidate (some day) can pull on his off day before the Dodgers?
That kinda bothers me because we need Pete to be an MVP caliber player and that starts when you get out of bed and applies to all facets of life.
He’s certainly off to a rapid pace and appears way ahead of schedule in his development… He’s already hitting for power and winning games singlehandedly. And you imagine that translates to high quality dinner reservations and even better local trim around the apartment.
But you can only be slumming it on a golf course in your first full season as an everyday centerfielder. It’s cute now out of necessity but if we win the division next year and he’s still golfing Deerfield in April then I got a big fuckin problem and the rest of you are coming with me. By then we need at least an Olympia Fields membership with member privileges at Flossmor or at least Crystal Tree for early Mondays. Obviously the Beverly blowhards would have a stick up their ass but we got options on the South Side and I’d be remiss not to share them when it makes sense.
For now though it’s cute until it’s not.
