It’s Laugh-Out-Loud (LOL) Funny That Rafael Devers Refuses To Give Up 3rd Base To Alex Bregman

I feel more invested in Alex Bregman on the Red Sox because I fully committed to him being a Cub. I went all-in that Jed would make the deal and I was wrong. So naturally I’m going to follow his time on the Red Sox and unfortunately hope that he underperforms vs. wildly over-performing. And should he produce an MVP-type season, I will naturally be in a deep and dark place.

I understand that’s shitty of me but I can be a shitty baseball fan like this. Nothing personal against Alex Bregman as much as I want to know we avoided a bad contract. Like when you forget to put in a wager before a game starts and then you end up cheering for the other side as if the universe is keeping track of your intentions.

That’s how I feel about Alex Bregman on the Red Sox and it’s the exact reason I love this clip so much of Rafael Devers being astonished he would DH.

This whole time you just assumed the Red Sox had plans or an agreement for Bregman to play 3rd and Devers would DH. That’s because Bregman is a gold glove 3rd baseman and Rafael Devers is the complete opposite.

Specifically, he’s the worst qualified third baseman in MLB by a wide margin

It would be hysterical to know the Red Sox didn’t even talk to Devers about DH’ing and just assumed he hated being a bad third baseman. Like you’re doing this guy a favor giving him a cupcake DH job while he’s already signed through 2033 for $313,000,000. He’s not playing for a contract or extension or arbitration. He’s already signed and paid for life, and now the opportunity comes up where you can just DH on that contract and you say no???

ESPN — The Red Sox’s ballyhooed signing of Alex Bregman was met with considerable resistance Monday when Rafael Devers said he wouldn’t cede third base.

Devers, a three-time All-Star, has played the hot corner for Boston since 2017 and himself received a major deal just two years ago.

“Third base is my position,” Devers said through an interpreter. “It’s what I play. I don’t know what their plans are. We had a conversation. I made it clear on what my desires were. Whatever happens from here, I don’t know.”

When asked whether he would be willing to become a designated hitter, Devers said “no” without waiting for his interpreter to relay the question.

This is so unnecessary for so many compeltely avoidable reasons.

The reality is that Rafael Devers is one of the best left-handed hitters in the American League and is easily the alpha male in the Red Sox clubhouse. He might be the only player on the roster with unilateral control over his playing time, position and spot in the batting order. And the fact the Red Sox committed $40,000,000 a year to someone else who plays his position gives them almost $75,000,000 in all star third basemen.

That’s incredible and amazing and exactly why I’m happy the Cubs don’t have position drama with Seiya moving to DH. Nothing worse than actively complaining about being the designated hitter just because you’re a selfish jabroni on the game’s biggest stage.

I’m of the opinion that you play where the manager tells you no matter your contract or ego. And that’s because the manager’s job is to create the best lineup that wins the most amount of games… a process that takes the entire offseason to analyze and simulate with dozens of intelligent people working algorithms and databases. All of that quantitative organizational to make your best decision, and then Rafael Devers just says No Way Jose.

That’s really funny and I can’t wait to see it unfold. So much that I might even make the Red Sox my 2nd team for the 2025 season.

PS – I’ve been firing off LOL for 25 years and will probably never stop. I don’t know if that’s lame by younger standards so let me just clearly say I do not give a flying F word if it’s cool or not. I say LOL because I want to and that’s the bottom line.
